OVERVIEW

Old New York gets an upgrade at this beloved Upper East Side hotel. Star designer Jacques Grange transformed the stuffy 1927 interiors into a showcase of 21st-century style in 2009, with bespoke pieces by Vladimir Kagan, Paul Mathieu and Eric Schmitt. There’s a playfulness to the high design, with poppy black-and-white-striped floors and a slinky-like chandelier lighting the Turnbull & Asser–clad staff.

PRACTICAL INFO

Location

The Mark is housed, as it has always been, in the beautiful, 1927 landmark building at the corner of 77th Street and Madison Avenue in NYC. Situated in one of Manhattan’s most exclusive neighborhoods, surrounded by New York City’s premier museums, retailers and restaurants, and the splendor of Central Park, The Mark not only surrounds you in luxury and style, it places you at the epicenter of New York City’s social and cultural riches.

Accomodation

The 140 cream-and-tobacco guest rooms feature photomurals by Karl Lagerfeld, Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems, and Quagliotti bed linens. The bathrooms feel Art Deco–glam, with deep soaking tubs, mirrored flat-screen TVs and luxury amenities. The guest rooms and suites are private havens of quiet, understated luxury, seamlessly incorporating the latest personal technologies into Grange’s sublimely serene décor and furnishings.

Services

The exclusive Frederic Fekkai salon and the Punch Fitness Center are welcome features with the hotel’s busy business crowd. But the real star of the show is the Mark by Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, with its bronze and glass ceiling by Eric Schmitt. The tasty seasonal menus change throughout the day and the restaurant is always busy. If you have to wait, order a signature cucumber cocktail in the Mark Bar, popular with the after-work crowd for its dark, deal-making atmosphere and grand Guy de Rougemont furnishings.

CONNOISSEUR'S INSIDER TIP

The hotel’s bar has always been a top spot for a quiet, classy drink, but now it’s been refurbished—and that curvy bar is actually the work of contemporary artist Guy de Rougemont.
